One of the most frequent questions I receive from my mentees during mentoring sessions is how to manage work-life balance.

Many struggle to switch off from work, especially when working from home. The constant flow of work-related calls from bosses, peers, and team members prevents them from fully disconnecting, leading to heightened anxiety.

Can you stop thinking about work while having dinner, exercising, or enjoying a cup of coffee with family? For most, the answer is “No.”

When thoughts of work intrude into your personal life, it signifies an inability to detach from work, a stressor that can impact both your physical and mental health. Your daily life becomes chaotic, and you may feel out of control—not only are you dealing with work pressures, but also stressors at home, whether it’s managing children, caregiving for elderly parents, or juggling household chores.

The Hybrid Work Environment: Productivity with Challenges

According to the Pew Research Center’s American Trends Panel, many employees working in hybrid or remote environments report positive outcomes. In fact, 21.8% of them feel more productive, 20.7% express greater job satisfaction, and a striking 50.8% report being more engaged in their work. These statistics highlight the benefits of flexible working arrangements.

However, challenges persist. For example, 23% of employees face issues securing a dedicated home office space, and 43% struggle with constant interruptions throughout the day. In addition to these obstacles, remote workers experience technical difficulties like slow internet connections, and some feel isolated from their teams, with 30% reporting disconnection from colleagues.

The struggle for balance also affects personal lives. Twenty-seven percent of remote workers find it harder to manage work and family responsibilities, and almost half (47%) say they spend too little time with their children under 18. Meanwhile, 40% acknowledge spending insufficient time with their spouses due to the blurred lines between work and home life.

Strategies for Managing Work-Life Balance

To prevent stress hormones like cortisol from rising and affecting your overall health, here are a few strategies to implement:

  1. 1. Set Boundaries in a Hybrid Work Model

If you work from home part of the week, create and stick to clear boundaries. Log off at set times and silence work-related communication tools such as email, phone, and Slack. Schedule specific times to check your messages, rather than constantly grabbing your phone.

Regardless of what you do or what your role is, nothing is more important than you and your loved one’s sense of inner peace and happiness. Don’t get too obsessed for completing the list of things on your to do list. We all feel that once we complete everything on the to do list, we can relax. In reality, that rarely happens. New items always keep getting added to the to-do list.

2.Practice Detachment from Work

To reduce work-related anxiety, relax by taking a walk-in nature, observing your surroundings, and appreciating the beauty around you. At the end of the week, write a list of your accomplishments. While making a to-do list helps keep you focused, reflecting on what went well can foster a sense of achievement.

3.Use Breathing as a Stress-Busting Tool

Deep, mindful breathing is one of the most powerful ways to reduce stress. It slows your heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and helps alleviate anxiety.

Finding the Balance

Incorporating these habits into your routine may seem challenging at first, but over time, they can help you regain control over your work-life balance. While hybrid work offers flexibility and boosts productivity, the challenges of managing interruptions, family time, and isolation must be acknowledged and addressed. By setting boundaries and engaging in mindful relaxation, you can enjoy a healthier and more balanced life—both personally and professionally.

As you navigate the blurred lines between work and personal life, what boundaries will you set today to protect your well-being and reclaim balance?
